As-Saaffaat - الصافات
﷽
5 رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ
the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and the Lord of the easts.
6 إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ
Indeed We have adorned the lowest heaven with the finery of the stars,
8 لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ
They do not eavesdrop on the Supernal Elite—they are shot at from every side,
9 دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ
to drive them away, and there is a perpetual punishment for them—
10 إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ ٱلْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ
except any who snatches a snatch, whereat a piercing flame pursues him.
11 فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍۭ
Ask them, is their creation more prodigious or [that of other creatures] that We have created? Indeed, We created them from a viscous clay.
13 وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا يَذْكُرُونَ
and [even] when admonished do not take admonition,
14 وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ
and when they see a sign they make it an object of ridicule,
15 وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
and say, ‘This is nothing but plain magic!’
16 أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
‘What! When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?
19 فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
It will be only a single shout and, behold, they will look on,
20 وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَا هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ
and say, ‘Woe to us! This is the Day of Retribution!’
21 هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
‘This is the Day of Judgement that you used to deny!’
22 ٱحْشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ
‘Muster the wrongdoers and their mates and what they used to worship
23 مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
besides Allah, and show them the way to hell!
24 وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ
[But first] stop them! For they must be questioned.’
27 وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
Some of them will turn to others, questioning each other.
28 قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
They will say, ‘Indeed you used to accost us peremptorily.’
29 قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
They will answer, ‘No, you [yourselves] had no faith.
30 وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَـٰنٍۭ ۖ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَـٰغِينَ
We had no authority over you. No, you [yourselves] were a rebellious lot.
31 فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَآ ۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ
So our Lord’s word became due against us that we shall indeed taste [the punishment].
32 فَأَغْوَيْنَـٰكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِينَ
So we perverted you, for we were perverse [ourselves].’
33 فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ
So, that day they will share the punishment.
34 إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
Indeed, that is how We deal with the guilty.
35 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
Indeed, it was they who, when they were told, ‘There is no god except Allah,’ used to be disdainful,
36 وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍۭ
and [they would] say, ‘Shall we abandon our gods for a crazy poet?’
37 بَلْ جَآءَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
Indeed, he has brought [them] the truth, and confirmed the [earlier] apostles.
38 إِنَّكُمْ لَذَآئِقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَلِيمِ
Indeed you will taste the painful punishment,
39 وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
and you will be requited only for what you used to do
45 يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍۭ
served around with a cup, from a clear fountain,
47 لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ
wherein there will be neither headache nor will it cause them stupefaction,
48 وَعِندَهُمْ قَـٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ عِينٌ
and with them will be maidens, of restrained glances with big [beautiful] eyes,
50 فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
Some of them will turn to others, questioning each other.
51 قَالَ قَآئِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّى كَانَ لِى قَرِينٌ
One of them will say, ‘Indeed I had a companion
52 يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَ
who used to say, ‘‘Are you really among those who affirm
53 أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ
that when we have died and become dust and bones, we shall be brought to retribution?’’ ’
55 فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِى سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
Then he will take a look and sight him in the middle of hell.
56 قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرْدِينِ
He will say, ‘By Allah, you had almost ruined me!
57 وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ
Had it not been for my Lord’s blessing, I too would have been among those mustered [in hell]!’
59 إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
aside from our earlier death, and that we shall not be punished?
61 لِمِثْلِ هَـٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ ٱلْعَـٰمِلُونَ
Let all workers work for the like of this!
62 أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ
Is this a better reception, or the Zaqqum tree?
63 إِنَّا جَعَلْنَـٰهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
Indeed We have made it a punishment for the wrongdoers.
64 إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِىٓ أَصْلِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
It is a tree that rises from the depths of hell.
65 طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ
Its spathes are as if they were devils’ heads.
66 فَإِنَّهُمْ لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ
They will eat from it and gorge with it their bellies.
67 ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
On top of that they will take a solution of scalding water.
71 وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
Most of the former peoples went astray before them,
72 وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ
and We had certainly sent warners among them.
73 فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
So observe how was the fate of those who were warned
75 وَلَقَدْ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ ٱلْمُجِيبُونَ
Certainly Noah called out to Us, and how well did We respond!
76 وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
We delivered him and his family from their great distress,
78 وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
and left for him a good name among posterity:
84 إِذْ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
when he came to his Lord with a sound heart [untainted by sin].
85 إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ
When he said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you are worshiping?
86 أَئِفْكًا ءَالِهَةً دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ
Is it a lie, gods other than Allah, that you desire?
87 فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
Then what is your idea about the Lord of all the worlds?’
91 فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ
Then he stole away to their gods and said, ‘Will you not eat?
95 قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ
He said, ‘Do you worship what you have yourselves carved,
96 وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
when Allah has created you and whatever you make?’
97 قَالُوا۟ ٱبْنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنْيَـٰنًا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِى ٱلْجَحِيمِ
They said, ‘Build a structure for him and cast him into a huge fire.’
98 فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ
So they sought to outwit him, but We made them the lowermost.
99 وَقَالَ إِنِّى ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ
He said, ‘Indeed I am going toward my Lord, who will guide me.’
100 رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
‘My Lord! Give me [an heir], one of the righteous.’
101 فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِيمٍ
So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son.
102 فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعْىَ قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
When he was old enough to assist in his endeavour, he said, ‘My son! I see in dreams that I am sacrificing you. See what you think.’ He said, ‘Father! Do whatever you have been commanded. If Allah wishes, you will find me to be patient.’
103 فَلَمَّآ أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلْجَبِينِ
So when they had both surrendered [to Allah’s will], and he had laid him down on his forehead,
105 قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
You have indeed fulfilled your vision! Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous!
112 وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِإِسْحَـٰقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
And We gave him the good news of [the birth of] Isaac, a prophet, one of the righteous.
113 وَبَـٰرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِۦ مُبِينٌ
And We blessed him and Isaac. Among their descendants [some] are virtuous, and [some] who manifestly wrong themselves.
115 وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوْمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
and delivered them and their people from their great distress,
116 وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ
and We helped them so that they became the victors.
117 وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمَا ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ٱلْمُسْتَبِينَ
We gave them the illuminating scripture
119 وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِمَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
and left for them a good name in posterity.
122 إِنَّهُمَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
They are indeed among Our faithful servants.
124 إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
When he said to his people, ‘Will you not be Godwary?
125 أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَ
Do you invoke Baal and abandon the best of creators,
126 ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?,’
127 فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ
they impugned him. So they will indeed be mustered [in hell]
134 إِذْ نَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ
When We delivered him and all his family,
135 إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِى ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ
excepting an old woman among those who remained behind,
141 فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ
he drew lots with them and was the one to be condemned [as one to be thrown overboard].
142 فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ
Then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.
143 فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ
Had he not been one of those who celebrate Allah’s glory,
144 لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
he would have surely remained in its belly till the day they will be resurrected.
145 فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ
Then We cast him on a bare shore, and he was sick.
146 وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ
So We made a gourd plant grow above him.
147 وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ
We sent him to a [community of] hundred thousand or more,
148 فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ
and they believed [in him]. So We provided for them for a while.
149 فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلْبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلْبَنُونَ
Ask them, are daughters to be for your Lord while sons are to be for them?
150 أَمْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَـٰثًا وَهُمْ شَـٰهِدُونَ
Did We create the angels females while they were present?
151 أَلَآ إِنَّهُم مِّنْ إِفْكِهِمْ لَيَقُولُونَ
Be aware that it is out of their mendacity that they say,
152 وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ
‘Allah has begotten [offsprings],’ and they indeed speak a falsehood.
157 فَأْتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
Then produce your scripture, should you be truthful.
158 وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَيْنَهُۥ وَبَيْنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ ٱلْجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ
And they have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn, while the jinn certainly know that they will be presented [before Him].
159 سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ
Clear is Allah of whatever they allege [about Him]
164 وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
‘There is none among us but has a known place.
168 لَوْ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكْرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
‘Had we possessed a Reminder from our predecessors,
169 لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
we would have surely been Allah’s exclusive servants.’
170 فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
But they disbelieved it [when it came to them]. Soon they will know!
171 وَلَقَدْ سَبَقَتْ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
Certainly Our decree has gone beforehand in favour of Our servants, the apostles,
175 وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ
and watch them; soon they will see [the truth of the matter]!
177 فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
But when it descends in their courtyard it will be a dismal dawn for those who had been warned.
180 سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ
Clear is your Lord, the Lord of Might, of whatever they allege [concerning Him].
182 وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
